About Micah Barkley

I am a passionate storyteller and recent graduate of Florida A&M University, where I received my Bachelor of Science in Broadcast Journalism. My journey in media began with the written word, first as a staff writer for Journey Magazine, where I learned the power of narrative and how to bring stories to life, but my love for journalism could never be confined to just one medium.

I took my voice to the airwaves with a hip-hop and R&B show called Mic Check with Micah on 90.5 The Flava Station, where I explored music, culture, and conversation in a way that felt authentic to who I am. From there, I transitioned into leadership roles, becoming the online editor for Journey Magazine and The Famuan, strengthening my ability to shape digital storytelling and oversee editorial direction.

My drive for excellence and belief in journalism’s power led me to serve as Chief-of-Staff for The Famuan, ensuring our newsroom operated purposefully. Soon after, I stepped into the role of Editor-in-Chief, leading a team of over 50 passionate journalists and overseeing coverage that mattered to our student body and community. Simultaneously, I expanded my presence in broadcast as a reporter for FAMU TV20, further cementing my love for visual storytelling and investigative reporting.

I have been featured in Teen Vogue and Vanity Fair, speaking on the evolving political climate in Florida and its impact on young voters, HBCU students, and communities of color. My commitment to journalism has also taken me across the country—from New York City with Bloomberg’s HBCU Academy of Excellence, where I gained hands-on experience in financial journalism, to Howard University for the Indaba Summit and the Center for Journalism and Democracy Summit, where I engaged with some of the nation’s top journalists on the future of truth and accountability in the media.

I have also hosted impactful events, such as a pitch workshop for students looking to pitch to outside publications and a sit-down talk with The New York Times Opinion Editor Kathleen Kingsbury about her career journey.

As a journalist, I have also gained hands-on experience through my internships with Onyx Magazine and PBS FRONTLINE. At Onyx Magazine, I contributed to coverage highlighting Black excellence, culture, and business, refining my ability to tell stories that celebrate and inform. At FRONTLINE, I worked in research and vetting, strengthening my investigative skills and commitment to fact-driven, in-depth reporting. I have worked on researching and fact-checking specific scenes for four FRONTLINE films: The VP Choice: Vance vs. Walz, A Year of War: Israelis and Palestinians, American Voices and China, the U.S. & the Rise of Xi Jinping. These experiences have deepened my passion for storytelling and reinforced my dedication to journalism, which is both impactful and thought-provoking.

In addition to my work in news and storytelling, I also explore my passions through podcasting. Mic Check with Micah dives into the world of music and lyrics, breaking down the artistry and meaning behind iconic songs, while Off the Rack with Cordell and Micah highlights the intersection of high fashion and collegiate style, analyzing trends and industry movements.

I am currently working as a Summer 2025 Bloomberg News Intern for their Consumer team.

To me, journalism is more than just delivering news; it’s about informing, challenging, and inspiring audiences. Whether I’m writing, hosting, or reporting, my goal remains the same: to tell stories that resonate, amplify voices that need to be heard, and make an impact through thoughtful, well-researched journalism.
